Birch Technical Services has played a key role in delivering a new full-fibre network connecting West Mersea with Colchester, as part of a major infrastructure project with long-standing network partner Amphora Connect.
The new Amphora Connect network is now live, providing homes and businesses across West Mersea with access to full-fibre broadband and a range of business connectivity services.
The deployment represents a significant investment in the area’s digital infrastructure and another major fibre project delivered by the Birch Technical Services team.
An 18km fibre route from Colchester to Mersea Island
The project involved the installation of approximately 18km of new fibre infrastructure, creating a route from Colchester city centre through Old Heath, Abberton and Peldon before crossing The Strood and reaching West Mersea.
Delivering a fibre route of this scale across rural Essex and onto an island brought a number of engineering challenges, requiring careful planning and specialist expertise throughout the deployment.
Working alongside Amphora Connect, the Birch Technical Services team helped overcome these challenges to deliver the infrastructure required to extend the network onto Mersea Island.
The result is a resilient, future-ready fibre connection that forms part of Amphora Connect’s wider network across North East Essex.
Supporting the growing demand for connectivity
Reliable digital connectivity has become an essential part of everyday infrastructure for homes and businesses.
Unlike networks that retain copper for part of the connection, full-fibre infrastructure takes fibre directly to the premises, providing greater capacity and reliability to support increasing digital demands.
For West Mersea, the newly completed infrastructure means residents can now access Amphora Connect’s full-fibre broadband services, while businesses can benefit from options including Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), dedicated business connectivity, private circuits and leased lines.
The network has also been designed to support symmetrical upload and download speeds, an increasingly valuable capability for businesses and households relying on cloud-based services, video conferencing, remote working and other data-intensive applications.
Extending the network across North East Essex
The West Mersea deployment forms part of Amphora Connect’s growing full-fibre infrastructure across North East Essex.
Its network extends across locations including Colchester and Wivenhoe, with the new 18km route providing the infrastructure needed to extend that connectivity onto Mersea Island.
For Birch Technical Services, the project demonstrates the team’s capability to deliver complex fibre infrastructure across challenging environments and at significant scale.
From the initial route through Colchester and the surrounding rural areas to the final connection onto the island, the project required the engineering expertise and practical problem-solving needed to deliver reliable infrastructure designed for long-term use.
