Professional cabling installation across the UK

Birch Technical Services designs and installs structured cabling systems for businesses, public sector organisations and industrial facilities throughout the United Kingdom. From single-floor office upgrades to complex multi-site infrastructure rollouts, we deliver CAT5e, CAT6 and fibre optic cabling that is built to perform, neatly routed, fully tested and comprehensively documented from day one.

Every installation we carry out is planned around your specific site layout, usage demands and future growth requirements. We do not apply a one-size-fits-all approach. Our engineers assess your environment, recommend the right cabling specification for your needs, and install a system that will support your network reliably for years to come.

All installations are carried out to industry standards and certified on completion. You receive full test results and as built documentation at handover so you always know exactly what has been installed and how it performs.

CAT5e cabling

CAT5e remains a dependable, cost-effective solution for standard business networking environments. Supporting data transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps, it is well suited to offices and facilities where bandwidth demands are moderate and budget efficiency is a priority.

CAT6 cabling

CAT6 is the recommended standard for most modern commercial installations. It supports faster data transfer speeds, offers improved resistance to interference, and provides better headroom for evolving network demands. We specify CAT6 as standard on the majority of new installations.

CAT6A cabling

CAT6A supports 10 Gbps data transfer over the full 100-metre channel length and is the preferred choice for high-performance environments, data centres and future-proofed installations. If your business handles large data volumes or you want maximum longevity from your infrastructure, CAT6A is worth considering.

Fibre optic cabling

For long distance backbone runs, inter-building connectivity or environments requiring immunity to electrical interference, fibre optic cabling delivers unmatched performance. As a Fibreoptic Industry Association (FIA) accredited installer, Birch Technical Services has the qualifications and experience to design and install both single-mode and multimode fibre optic systems to exacting standards.

Patch panels, cabinets and cable management

A structured cabling installation is only as good as the infrastructure that supports it. We install and configure patch panels, data cabinets, cable trays, trunking and containment as part of every project, ensuring your cabling is organised, accessible and easy to maintain or expand in the future.

Moves, Adds and Changes (MACS)

Birch Technical Services supports Moves, Adds and Changes (MACS) projects, helping organisations adapt their network infrastructure as business needs evolve. We provide structured cabling modifications, relocations and upgrades that maintain performance, compliance and future scalability.

Our structured cabling installation process

Every project follows the same clear process, from initial enquiry through to certified handover.

1.

Free site survey

We begin with a thorough site survey carried out by one of our qualified engineers. We assess your existing infrastructure, understand your requirements and plan the most efficient cabling route and specification for your project.

2.

Design and specification

We produce a detailed design including cable routes, equipment locations, cabinet layouts and a full bill of materials, always recommending the best specification for your budget.

3.

Installation

Our engineers carry out the installation cleanly, efficiently and with minimal disruption to your operations. All cabling is neatly routed, correctly terminated and clearly labelled throughout. We work to the agreed programme and keep you informed at every stage.

4.

Testing and certification

Every cable run is individually tested using calibrated equipment and certified to the relevant performance standard. We do not consider a job complete until every link passes.

5.

Documentation and handover

At handover you receive a full set of as-built documentation, including test results, cable schedules and a network layout drawing. This gives you a complete record of your installation for future reference, maintenance or expansion.

Structured Cabling Installation- FAQs

What is structured cabling?

Structured cabling is a standardised, organised approach to installing network cabling within a building or site. Rather than running individual cables for each device, structured cabling creates a single unified system, using copper or fibre optic cables, that supports data, voice and other network services from a central point. The result is a clean, scalable and easy-to-manage network that supports your business both now and as it grows.

What is the difference between CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A?

CAT5e supports speeds up to 1 Gbps and suits standard business environments. CAT6 improves on this with better interference resistance and supports up to 10 Gbps over shorter run, it is our recommended standard for most new installations. CAT6A supports 10 Gbps over the full 100 metre channel length and is the right choice for high-performance environments or where maximum future-proofing is the priority. Our engineers will advise on the right specification during the site survey.

When should I choose fibre optic over copper cabling?

Fibre is the right choice for backbone runs between floors or buildings, environments where electrical interference is a concern, such as factory floors or plant rooms and any installation requiring very high bandwidth over longer distances. Copper cabling is typically used for the runs from network switches to individual workpoints. Many installations use a combination of both.

How long does a structured cabling installation take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the project. A small single-floor office can typically be completed in one to two days. Larger or multi-floor projects will take longer and will be scoped in detail during the design phase. We always provide a clear project timeline during the quoting process so you know exactly what to expect.

Will the installation disrupt our business?

We plan every installation to minimise disruption. Where needed, we can work outside normal business hours, evenings or weekends, to keep your operations running without interruption. We agree on an installation programme that works for you before any work begins.

Are your installations tested and certified?

Yes. Every cable run is tested using calibrated equipment and certified to the relevant performance standard. You receive a full set of test results and certification at handover, giving you documented evidence of your installation’s performance and compliance.

Do you provide maintenance and support after installation?

Yes. We offer ongoing maintenance, fault-finding and network moves, additions and changes after installation. If you need to expand your network, relocate workpoints or troubleshoot an issue, our team is available to help.

Can you work with our existing IT team or contractor?

Absolutely. We regularly work alongside in-house IT teams, main contractors and M&E teams on projects of all sizes. We are experienced in coordinating with other trades on site, meeting programme requirements and producing documentation that integrates with wider project records.

What areas do you cover?

We carry out structured cabling installations throughout the UK, Europe and internationally. While we are based in Essex and have strong roots in the East of England, we regularly travel for projects across multiple sectors and locations.
